Phonics Rule: Letter B
The letter B makes the /b/ sound, like in 'bat', 'big', and 'bug'. Both lips press together then release.
B is a voiced bilabial stop — both lips press together and release with voice. It always makes the /b/ sound except when silent at the end of words after m (as in 'lamb' or 'comb').
Tip
B looks like a bat — and bat starts with /b/!

Phonics Rule: Silent U
Sometimes U is silent, especially after G — like in 'guess', 'guitar', and 'build'.
The U is silent in two common spots: after G it keeps the G hard before E or I (guess, guest, guitar, guilt, guide, guard), and in the 'build' family (build, built, builder). You see the U but don't say it.

Guess what — the U is silent!

The letter I makes a short sound, like in 'sit' and 'big'.
When the letter I appears in a closed syllable, it usually makes the short I sound /ɪ/. This is one of the trickiest short vowels because it sounds similar to short E.
Tip
I says /ɪ/ like an itch you can't miss.

Phonics Rule: LT End Blend
LT at the end of a syllable blends /l/ and /t/ together, like in 'belt', 'melt', and 'salt'.
LT is an end blend. The lateral /l/ glides into the stop /t/ at the end of the syllable.
Tip
LT melts at the end — belt, melt, salt!
