G sometimes says /dʒ/ (like J) before E, I, or Y, like in 'gem' and 'giant'.
When G comes before E, I, or Y, it sometimes makes the soft /dʒ/ sound (like J). However, this rule has many exceptions ('get', 'give', 'girl').

S is a voiceless alveolar fricative when it makes the /s/ sound. At the end of many words it can also make a /z/ sound (as in 'dogs' or 'has'). At the start of a word it is always /s/.
