The letter M makes the /m/ sound, like in 'map', 'mud', and 'mop'. Both lips press together with voice through the nose.
M is a voiced bilabial nasal — both lips press together while the voice hums through the nose. Double M (mm) makes the same /m/ sound.

M hums like mmm — press your lips and hum!

Phonics Rule: R-Controlled AR
When R comes after A, it changes the sound to /ɑːr/, like in 'car' and 'star'.
When A is followed by R, the R 'bosses' the vowel and changes its sound. Instead of short A or long A, you hear /ɑːr/. R-controlled vowels are sometimes called 'Bossy R'.
Tip
Bossy R takes the car to the farm!

The letter K makes the /k/ sound, like in 'kite', 'kit', and 'king'.
K always makes the /k/ sound. It is used before E, I, and Y where C would make an /s/ sound instead. K is silent before N at the start of a word (knife, know).

K is for kite — and kite starts with /k/!

Phonics Rule: Suffix -ABLE
The suffix -ABLE means 'can be done'. It turns verbs into adjectives.
-ABLE means capable of: readable = can be read, washable = can be washed, breakable = can be broken. The vowel in -ABLE uses the schwa sound /ə/, making it sound like 'uh-bul'.
Tip
-ABLE means you're able to do it — readable means you can read it!
