Phonics breakdown
Phonics Rule: Prefix RE-
RE- means 'again'. 'Redo' means 'do again'.
The prefix re- means 'again' or 'back'. 'Read' → 'reread' (read again). 'Build' → 'rebuild' (build again).
Tip
RE means again — redo, replay, return!
Examples
Phonics Rule: SC Blend
SC at the start of a word makes the /sk/ sound, like in 'scan', 'scoop', and 'scale'.
SC blends the /s/ and /k/ sounds together. Before A, O, U, and most consonants it says /sk/. Before E and I, the C softens and SC can say /s/ (scene, science).
Tip
SC scoops — /sk/ like a scoop of ice cream!
Examples
Phonics Rule: UE Vowel Team (/juː/)
After most other consonants, UE keeps a Y-glide — like 'rescue' and 'value'.
When UE follows a consonant other than L, R, S, or J, it usually says /juː/ — with a Y-glide at the start. Companion rule to vowel_team_ue.
Tip
UE after most consonants — YOO!
